Whether you’re stuck in a skincare rut (or lack a routine altogether), it’s never too late to begin anew or enhance your current regimen. With the start of a new year, what better time than the present is there to get started?
1. Wash up.
Dermatologists have long advocated the importance of washing our faces nightly, and with good reason. While our epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin, works as a barrier, cosmetics, sweat, and pollutants left on the skin overnight can lead to clogged pores, breakouts, and a dull complexion. For healthy, glowing skin, always wash your face before bed. Experts also recommend exfoliating once or twice a week for most skin types – just be gentle! Harsh, abrasive treatments can do more harm than good
2. Be consistent (and patient).
Just like starting a diet and exercise program, adjusting to a skincare routine and reaping the benefits takes some time. While you may notice clearer skin from washing your face regularly quite quickly, other good skin habits may take longer to show improvement. For example, if you’ve just started a new skincare cream, be sure to give it at least six weeks of regular use before judging its effectiveness.
3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.
As we age, our skin loses its ability to retain moisture. Therefore, not restoring that lost moisture can lead to dry skin. Natural moisture-promoting creams can help the epidermis hold onto water longer and promote a healthy glow in the process. In addition, according to research from the University of Maryland and the Center for Integrative Medicine, dry skin can be a sign of omega-3 fatty acid deficiency. Further, research shows that omega-3’s may provide many health benefits, from cognitive function to lowered risk of certain diseases, so you’re likely doing more than your skin a favor by increasing your intake.
4. Don’t smoke.
Smoking prematurely ages and dries out facial skin, creating lines and wrinkles. Non-smokers also get more nutrients to their skin, including oxygen. If you’re having trouble quitting, check out these tips. In addition, natural remedies can help reduce nicotine cravings and balance the mood.
