TOP European Countries : UK, France and Germany lobbied for flawed car emissions tests, documents reveal.

The UK, France and Germany have been accused of hypocrisy for lobbying behind the scenes to keep outmoded car tests for carbon emissions, but later publicly calling for a European investigation into Volkswagen’s rigging of car air pollution tests.
Leaked documents seen by the Guardian show the three countries lobbied the European commission to keep loopholes in car tests that would increase real world carbon dioxide emissions by 14% above those claimed.
Just four months before the VW emissions scandal broke, the EU’s three biggest nations mounted a push to carry over loopholes from a test devised in 1970 – known as the NEDC – to the World Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), which is due to replace it in 2017.
“It is unacceptable that governments which rightly demand an EU inquiry into the VW’s rigging of air pollution tests are simultaneously lobbying behind the scenes to continue the rigging of CO2 emissions tests,” said Greg Archer, clean vehicles manager at the respected green think tank, Transport and Environment (T&E). “CO2 regulations should not be weakened by the backdoor through test manipulations.”
Vehicle emissions are responsible for 12% of Europe’s carbon emissions and by 2021, all new cars must meet an EU emissions limit of 95 grams of CO2 per km, putting accurate measurements of real emissions at a premium.
The loopholes would not only raise real world CO2 emissions from new cars to 110g CO2 per km – well above the EU limit – but increase fuel bills for drivers by €140 per year according T&E.
Huw Irranca-Davies, Labour MP and chair of an influential select committee of MPs, the environmental audit committee, said: “Given that the UK is struggling to bring down carbon emissions and other harmful pollutants from road vehicles it is extremely worrying that the UK government appears to be trying to water down the EU’s proposed new road testing regime.
“As well as cutting CO2 emissions, improving the efficiency of vehicles can save lives by reducing the illegal levels of air pollution in UK cities, so the Department for Transport should be making these tests more rigorous not less.”
The WLTP test was supposed to remove loopholes that had allowed a gap between real world CO2 emissions and test cycle ones to develop, whichEU consultants have estimated at up to 20%.
But the UK lobbied for car makers to be allowed to exploit flexibilities such as externally charging their batteries to full before testing. The Department for Transport also argued that the best available technologies should be shunned in favour of outdated ‘inertia classes’, which involve manually adding 100 kilo weights to the car to see what effect greater weight on the amount of CO2 the car pumps out.
Research by the International Council on Clean Transportation has found that car manufacturers often game these tests by optimising test car performances at one pound below the desired inertia class.
Germany went further than the UK, calling for the tests to be conducted on sloping downhill tracks, and for allowing manufacturers to declare a final CO2 value 4% lower than the one measured. France supported all the proposed loopholes, bar the 4% lower CO2 value.
Together, these flexibilities would allow some 14% more CO2 to be emitted than EU regulations permit, according to an analysis by T&E. CO2 emissions contribute to climate change, while the nitrogen oxides (NOx) that VW rigged tests for are primarily a cause of local air pollution.
In a letter to the European commission on 29 May, Bob Moran, the Department for Transport’s head of regulation and R&D argued that a ‘correlation tool’ between the old and new tests should include the old procedures for inertia classes and battery recharges.
“It appears to be a common position under NEDC test conditions that manufacturers will (request to) recharge the battery during the soak period, or (request to) replace a partially depleted battery with a fully charged one at the start of the test proper,” he wrote. “We believe this commonly used approach should be reflected in the correlation tool.”
France backed this position for technical reasons, arguing that it provided “repeatable information”. But a fully-charged battery also prevents a car’s alternator from kicking in and releasing carbon emissions during tests, as would happen in real world driving situations.

In a sign of growing anger at the VW emissions-rigging scandal, which saw Martin Winterkorn resign on Wednesday, the European parliament’s environment committee voted earlier today for real world air pollutant emissions tests to begin no later than 2017.
The panel of MEPs also demanded that no loopholes or deviations be allowed for pollution limits.
“For too long European car makers have been ducking the EU’s rules to enable them to keep their highly polluting cars on the road,” said Keith Taylor, the Green MEP for south-east England. “The huge scandal with Volkswagen on car pollution rules must focus the minds of EU politicians and the British government. Air pollution kills tens of thousands in the UK every year. With the added unchecked emissions from Volkswagen cars, I worry about how much worse the situation actually is”.

Life Lessons

Health:
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a beggar.
3. Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.
4. Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm and Empathy
5. Make time to pray.

7. Read more books than you did in the previous year.
8. Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day
9. Sleep for 7 hours.
10. Take a 30 minute walk daily. And while you walk, smile!


Personality:
11. Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

WAYS TO INCREASE POSITIVE ENERGY IN OUR HOMES




1) Open all windows in the house and allow fresh air and sunshine to enter the house. Free flowing air and sun are excellent negativity removers. Keeping the windows closed prevents positive energy from coming inside your house and negative energy from going out. Can result to a good energy balance 
2) Throw out all the clutter out of the house. Clean your house. Dispose of all the old unwanted things lying in the house. Clutter is a negativity magnet. It attracts and accumulates negative energy in the house.
3). Walking barefoot in the house helps all your negative energy to be absorbed by the earth.
Grounding is important to keep the energy balance in our body.
Walking barefoot on grass is also an excellent way to ground yourself.
4) Always leave your footwear at the entrance of the house. Our footwear collects negative energy.
Hence in the olden days, these were kept out of the house. People used to enter the house only after washing feet with water. This action ensures that all the negativity remains outside or are grounded by earth and does not enter the house. Now it has become difficult to keep the footwear outside. So preferably remove them near the entrance door.
5) Go out in the open air. Take a walk in the garden or open ground. Being amongst nature re-energizes or charges you fully.
6) Sweeping the floor also ensures that the negative energies are shaken and moved out with the dirt.
7) Rock salt is another negativity remover. Wash or mop your floor with a fistful rock salt in a bucket of water. This ensures that every nook and corner of the house is rid of negative energy.
8) Potted plants or trees around your house or society also ensures more positive energy in the house and area.

9) Bathing or Soaking your legs and hands in rock salt water once in a while removes the negativity attached to your body.
11) Repetition of Prayers, increases the positive vibrations in the house.
11) Keep your thoughts, action and speech Positive. Negative thoughts will bring in negative vibes. So avoid all negative thoughts, speech and actions.
12) Keep your house well lit and illuminated. Light removes negativity.
13) Keep faith in God and in yourself.

Today, when I slipped on the wet tile floor a boy in a wheelchair caught me before I slammed my head on the ground. He said, “Believe it or not, that’s almost exactly how I injured my back 3 years ago .

Today, I asked my mentor – a very successful business man in his 70’s – what his top 3 tips are for success. He smiled and said, “Read something no one else is reading, think something no one else is thinking, and do something no one else is doing. 
Today, I interviewed my grandmother for part of a research paper I’m working on for my MBA class. When I asked her to define success in her own words, she said, “Success is when you look back at your life and the memories make you smile.
I am blind by birth. When I was 8 years old, I wanted to play baseball. I asked my father- "Dad, can I play baseball?" He said "You'll never know until you try." When I was a teenager, I asked him, - "Dad Can I become a surgeon?". He replied "Son, you'll never know until you try." Today I am a Surgeon, just because I tried!
Today, after a 72 hour shift at the fire station, a woman ran up to me at the grocery store and gave me a hug. When I tensed up, she realized I didn’t recognize her. She let go with tears of joy in her eyes and the most sincere smile and said, “On 9-11-2001, you carried me out of the World Trade Center.”
Today, after I watched my dog get run over by a car, I sat on the side of the road holding him and crying. And just before he died, he licked the tears off my face.
Today at 7AM, I woke up feeling ill, but decided I needed the money, so I went into work. At 3PM I got laid off. On my drive home I got a flat tire. When I went into the trunk for the spare, it was flat too. A man in a BMW pulled over, gave me a ride, we chatted, and then he offered me a job. 
Today, as my father, three brothers, and two sisters stood around my mother’s hospital bed, my mother uttered her last coherent words before she died. She simply said, “I feel so loved right now. We should have gotten together like this more often.”
Today, I kissed my dad on the forehead as he passed away in a small hospital bed. About 5 seconds after he passed, I realized it was the first time I had given him a kiss since I was a little boy.
Today, in the cutest voice, my 8-year-old daughter asked me to start recycling. I chuckled and asked, “Why?” She replied, “So you can help me save the planet.” I chuckled again and asked, “And why do you want to save the planet?” “Because that’s where I keep all my stuff,” she said.
12. JOY
Today, when I witnessed a 27-year-old breast cancer patieent laughing hysterically at her 2-year-old daughter’s antics, I suddenly realized that I need to stop complaining about my life and start celebrating it again.
Today, a boy in a wheelchair saw me desperately struggling on crutches with my broken leg and offered to carry my backpack and books for me. He helped me all the way across campus to my class and as he was leaving he said, “I hope you feel better soon.”.
14. SHARING
Today, I was traveling in Germany and I met a refugee from Syria. He said he hadn't eaten anything in over 5 days and looked extremely skinny and unhealthy. Then my friend offered him the rest of the sandwich he was eating. The first thing the man said was, “We can share it.”

HELPFUL TIPS:  THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SUGAR



Every time you consume something rich in sugar, you are sending a message that you don’t care about your body, that you are satisfied with foods that are making you sick, fat, and unhealthy.


1. WHY SHOULD YOU BE WORRIED ABOUT HOW MUCH SUGAR YOU CONSUME:

- Sugar adds empty calories to your diet. “Empty calories” means foods, which don't have any nutritional benefit.
Sugar promotes belly fat.
- Eating excess sugar could lead to weight gain, obesity, diabetes and “diabetes” which bring a host of other health problems such as heart disease.

2. WHAT HAPPENS IN OUR BODY WHEN WE CONSUME SUGAR?
When we eat sugar, our body has 2 options on how to deal with it:
- Burn it for energy.
- Store excess sugar in our fat cells.

3. HOW DOES OUR BODY STORE EXCESS SUGAR IN FAT CELLS?
- When our pancreas detects a rush of sugar, it releases a hormone called insulin to deal with all of that excess sugar.
- Insulin helps regulate that level of sugar in our blood and store all of this glucose in fat cells

4. WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ADDED SUGAR AND NATURAL SUGAR?
- Added sugars are those that are added to foods. The most common added sugars are regular table sugar (sucrose) or high fructose corn syrup.
- Natural sugar is the kind of sugar contained in fruits, vegetables, and other plants.

5. HOW MUCH ADDED SUGAR SHOULD YOU CONSUME PER DAY?
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), the maximum amount of added sugars you should eat in a day are:
- Men: 150 calories per day from added sugar (37.5 grams or 9 teaspoons).
- Women: 100 calories per day from added sugar (25 grams or 6 teaspoons).

6. HOW MUCH NATURAL SUGAR IS GOOD FOR YOU?
- Specific sugar recommendations aren’t available for natural sugars which occur in fruits.
- Fruits are packed with beneficial vitamins, minerals and fiber.
- Your daily consumption of Fruits and Vegetables should be around 33% of your diet.

7. WHAT ABOUT FRUIT SUGAR?
- When you consume fruit, you are not only consuming fructose, but also consuming fiber and lots of vitamins and minerals, which are good for your health.
- But yes, fruits do have an effect on our blood sugar, as it is sugar.
- Generally fruit will cause less of a blood sugar spike compared to nutrient-void table sugar.

8. WHAT ABOUT FRUIT JUICES?
- When you consume fruit juices, the juice is squeezed, giving you all of the juice but very little of the fiber or nutrients that get left behind in the process.
- For this reason, many fruit juices should probably be called “sugar water”.
- If you are going to eat fruit, get it in fruit form, not juice form.

9. WHICH ARE THE FOODS THAT CONTAIN LOT OF SUGAR?
- White bread (maida)
- Pasta (unless whole grain)
- White flour (maida) products made with it such as cake, cookies, crackers, doughnuts and muffins.
- Potato chips and sugar rich chocolates
- Products with added sugar, e.g. jams and jellies
- Salad dressings and sauces with added sugar
- Fruit drinks containing added sugar
- Sugar-sweetened soft drinks

10. WHAT ARE THE BEST THINGS TO EAT WHEN YOU REALLY WANT  SOMETHING SWEET?
- If you are going to eat sugar, get it from fruits.
- Go for plain yogurt with fruits.
- If you can't pass up something with added sugar, make sure it is made with oats or whole grains instead of white flour (maida).
